Deep inside each of us is a desperate hunger for a particular life. It's usually built around great amounts of freedom and deeply connected relationships. A life that is truly healthy and satisfying.
We all go about pursuing this life, but amazingly, the vast majority of people give up along the way. People settle instead for "Default Life."
Finish the following sentences:
- My ultimate life cannot happen because...
- My endeavors will not reach pinnacle performance because...
- I might stand a chance if it weren't for...
You see, most of us are aware of the billions of others on this planet and immediately struggle to find significance, and among the masses we convince ourselves that we just don't matter, then we default to just getting by as best we can. We find it less painful if we just give up on "what could be."
Many of you know I am a dreamer. I can't count how many people have tried to confine me to a disposition of settling for the success I already have. The church even tried to tell me that my pursuit was wrong, that something in me must be broke because of my relentless pursuit of excellence.
Worst still are those who actually see my failed endeavors and smugly say "I told you so."
What most CAN'T see is the trail I've made because most aren't even on the mountain. The lessons learned have been nothing short of transformative. Many of you who run with me share this experience as well. And while we might not be able to say "we've arrived," at least we have never lost sight of our destination.
I invite you to join me on the path. It's small, rough, and is mostly uphill. But your best life is here. The superhighway of the masses does not go where you think.
