We all have aspirations. This is because there is a beautiful aspect of our humanity that can always imagine the world slightly better than it is.
We all have set backs, pain and frustration. Again, this is because there is a vital aspect of our being that knows it can be
better.
In the course of time many people get jaded, skeptical, cynical--for good reasons. But something dangerous can happen: we distrust.
The positive side of distrust is that we develop self-reliance. But the danger is that we conclude we don't need anyone else to help us. We degrade into an arrogance that sees our way and the only way or the best way. This sick form of pride puts the brakes on
upward progress, leaving us to wander sideways. It's called fundamentalism.
The truth is that we become much more as a community than we do as individuals. The lives of others reflect back to us our own limitations. The encouragement of others fuels us to overcome them.
The Greek word "Mathetes" means learner, student or disciple.
A student or learner is the opposite of the pride filled "know it
all." Learning requires humility. Being a student means that you listen to what another is saying.
A learner never says "I know all of this", instead they listen in agreement while mining the content for the subtle nuances or nuggets that will make their understanding of the world incrementally richer.
It is this 1% of the content that makes all the difference. This little difference can only come from a
disposition of humility. It is veiled from the proud & the certain.
Everyone has something valuable to contribute. Once we enter the learning process we enter something vastly greater. We enter another world. It's a city within our cities where amazing people thrive and rise to amazing heights. It's a promised kingdom-- here. Today.
