TV, a Wanter & a Shadow
"Most people gaze neither into the past nor the future; they explore neither truth nor lies. They gaze at the television." ~Radiohead

Happy Monday

This is NOT going to be a rant against the problems of watching too much TV. First because we have already heard it all before, and second because saying TV is bad is like saying the internet is bad or progress is bad.

Instead, this is an observation that I hope will help you appraise your life in a fresh way.

The act of watching TV is a portal through which we can access a very subtle part of our thinking. If you are not very self aware this may take a bit to see, but anyone can view this part of themselves if they are honest in their appraisal.

The next time you watch TV, try and elevate to your consciousness to the quick little conversation or motivation that goes through your head. It will be easier to see if you have something else you know you should be doing.
  • Is TV about escape? Does TV portrait aspects of your passions or life that you don't have?
  • Is TV about avoidance?  Does TV distract you from stress or relational pain that you do have?
Finish this sentence next time you are about to grab the remote: "I'm wanting to see..." or "I'm wanting to find..."

Use your TV to help identify your "WANTER."

Now here is where it gets interesting: All of us want something that we see on TV (Travel, a better quality of life, more money, 6-pack abs, hair removal, ect...), that is why we watch it, yet TV only provides a taste of it. An introduction at best.

Sometimes, only a taste is best. Other times, the tasting is a dissatisfying surrogate. A shadow of a life.

I invite you to use your TV to raise your consciousness about how you are living. I'm fairly certain that on the last hour of our last day we will not wish we would have watched another episode of House Hunters. I'll bet we will wish we would have lived more.

You will have a great week if you don't let TV keep you from building your best you.

"Prepare your work outside; get everything ready for yourself in the field, and after that build your house." Proverbs 24:27
