Vision or Sight?

Good morning !

Thanks for being a loyal subscriber to this list. I work hard each week to bring you little nuggets of content that will encourage you and build you up. Please share this with others by having your friends and co-workers subscribe.

This week I want to focus on vision. We hear a lot about vision when we talk about leadership but I'm not talking about that. The kind I'd like you to think about is the kind where you "see" behind the thing before you.

This quote gets at the idea, but go deeper. When we peer under our words and language, we discover that they are only instruments to describe something more than the words themselves. Words depict emotions, behaviors, postures, connections, and ideas. They create relationships between seemingly unconnected things. Words change objects into subjects and vice-versa. It's like a children's movie that has adult humor for the grown-ups to enjoy. The kids can't "see" the humor, but adults do.

Vision is the ability to see that thing behind the thing. To capture the beauty behind the beautiful & the marred. To apprehend the idea that is further back or higher up still. To get accurate bearings of our position and our trajectory.

People with a lot of vision are almost always straying from the herd. Their ideas are not often welcome. On the other hand, they are often proven right, their businesses succeed, and their lives are constantly filled with new stories.

It's a double edged sword.  Pursuing the thing behind the thing keeps you inquisitive and engaged in life, but that engagement is not unlike the bow of a boat engaging the waves. It's easy to see why so many people prefer what they see to all that they could possibly perceive.

Vision is not taught, it is caught. Our vision improves as our thinking improves. As we develop the skill to employ the knowledge we possess, we incrementally gain wisdom. As we place ourselves in proximity to the idea behind our words, our peripheral vision widens. As we apprehend the movement of things, then we are responsible for leading others in that direction. Each step validates the last and inspires the next.

Vision then, is connected to meaning. It is a life of faith.

If you'd like to explore this deeper, I wrote a blog post that touches this idea.

I hope you have a great week.

Neumaudio: Time Like These
Many of you have told me how much you appreciate this part of the weekly thought. It's amazing how music captures so many truths and distills them into easily absorbable nutrients.

"I'm a street light shining,
I'm a white light blinding bright,
burning off and on.

It's times like these you learn to live again,
It's times like these you give and give again.
It's times like these you learn to love again.
It's times like these time and time again."
