Couch Jumping & Change
Hey ! I hope you had a great weekend and were able to celebrate Father's Day.
I must have talked to a half dozen people this week that are truly frustrated at work. In fact, for many in our culture, things are much more dire. Not unlike the story of Exodus, there is a workforce of people who are
crying out for deliverance, for change, and for great leadership.
I can't count how many times I've asked my kids not to stand or jump on the couch. It must be an odd request in the mind of a child, because it rarely occurs to them to control that impulse. I wonder how many times my dad told me not to jump on the couch. Strangely, I can't remember a single instance.
There was a time I
likely figured I could never stop jumping on the couch but then at some point in my life, I jumped on the couch for the last time and I don't even remember when it occurred, but it did.
Some changes are like that.
Parenting, leadership and influence are all about being a steady counter balance in the world. In the midst of the process, we become exhausted, discouraged, and feel like our efforts make little measurable change.
Let me encourage you to not give up.
Keep Going!
Keep being that steady counter balance. I know its hard to see, but your efforts are cumulative. Eventually, corporate cultures will change. Eventually everything will change.
And the person hanging on a little longer may be the one that allows you to celebrate a transformation you never thought was possible. You may do this for someone else.
It's not necessarily your life you are improving. But the net result of your efforts is a
better you.
This is the path of redemption if you have the eyes to see it. The struggles & trials that our parents endured for their whole life are those that we endure for half a life, and they are those that our kids will quickly overcome and their kids will not see. At some point we become civilized and the couch jumping stops.
If change occurs too quickly, we miss the opportunity to become our best self.
And that allows us to see the wisdom and benevolence through our frustrations.
Have a great week.
