Thought of the Week: November 26
"Dogmatism and skepticism are both, in a sense, absolute philosophies; one is certain of knowing, the other of not knowing. What philosophy should dissipate is certainty, whether of knowledge or ignorance." ~Bertrand Russell

Happy Monday ! I hope you had an enjoyable Thanksgiving, - I really did.

Today's quote offers a helpful perspective that allows people who have diverse world-views to increase their solidarity and understanding with each other as they go through life.

Let's face it, we all think our views are the right ones. Sometimes they are right, but progress means coming to grips with the times we aren't. But how do you know?

Well, we can test them in life. But our experience doesn't tell the whole story does it? Trying to figure it out presupposes that there is a "Right Standard" higher up or further back or else we would not know if one viewpoint was in greater conformity to that standard of right we are seeking.

Relativism as a system doesn't work for a society who seeks order.  Fundamentalism doesn't work either for a society who seeks to be free.

I've given this some thought. Click the link to read more and then reply to my blog with your contribution to the conversation.

Have a great week.

Finish STRONG this year. Gear UP for next 2013.
Like many of you, we are examining the progress we were able to make in all of our professional endeavors for 2012. One thing is for certain, the progress that occurred, was only possible because of countless people--Customers, vendors, leaders, visionaries, those who inspired and challenged us.  Here are some simple things you can do to finish the year strong and get set for an exceptional year next year.

Tip #1:  Now is the time to tell all these people "Thank You!" Make plans to communicate your gratitude during the Holiday Season. Personalize your seasonal cards or gifts so they don't get lost in the shuffle, or send them early.

Tip #2:  Get your data in order. Make sure you know what things produced the best benefit to your business.  Then begin folding them into your quarterly plan for next year.  Don't just assume you know, and be honest about failures, shortcomings, and mistakes. It doesn't benefit you to minimize these when planning.

Tip #3:  Hire a specialist.  It doesn't matter what industry or business endeavor we are in, there is someone who specializes in precisely the thing our businesses desperately need.  There is a time to "poor boy" things by learning what we can and doing our best, but at some point if we want the success we are striving for, we will need to strategically employ the best. This is true in our personal lives too.

Tip #4:  Stay Inspired. Business leaders take a lot of bugs on their windshield. The law of entropy will cause the most resilient of us to buckle.  Find peers and leaders who will inspire you and help you to stay focused during blurry times.  This expands those spheres of relationships from Tip 1, and keeps us humble as perpetual learners.  This virtual group is a great start.

Tip #5:  Create efficiencies in time and money that will allow you to pursue your passions and deeper hopes for life. Never give up on you. Don't settle, not when you are at stake.

Books for your business library...
Many of you ask me what are some of my favorite books to read on business and leadership. Some of these are old and some are recent, but these five books will give you a paradigm upon which you can envision business completely differently. There are practical tools on how your business can really get lift off, but more than anything, these help you see the cosmic good that business brings to the world, and how a business endeavor can shape us into the best people we can possibly be.

1. Tipping Point by Malcom Gladwell
2. What Got You Here Won't Get You There by Marshall Goldsmith
3. Defending the Free Market by Rev. Robert Sirico
